How to Disable Send A Smile

This time I will show you how to disable Send a Smile that places itself on your office apps and never goes away.

I was working with Excel as usual when a message popped in front of me asking whether I’d like to send feedback about Excel to Microsoft. I happily clicked ok, since I like Excel quite a lot. Why not send feedback? This placed a smile icon next to my picture below X button.

But then I realized it is also placed on MS Outlook. Also on MS Word and so on… When I tried to remove it from all but Excel, I realized there is no way to disable send a smile. It seems that Microsoft takes your word as a promise for life.

I googled it of course but there is no normal way to disable send a smile. Even in Microsoft support forums, support personnel doesn’t help with the issue. Then I saw that a decent person shares a solution that actually works. But you need to know your way around windows to disable send a smile using this method. I’ll be explaining how to do it below:

When you accept to send feedback, MS Office registers this to your operating system. So you need to edit this registry record to disable send a smile.

Caution: Though following steps are pretty safe as long as you follow them to the letter, editing registry keys may cause your operating system to malfunction. So you may want to get help from a professional. Besides this solution may need administrative privileges.

Press start button and type “regedit” (without bracelets) into search box below and press enter.

This will open registry editor. Be aware that tampering with the records here may severely damage your operating system.

Locate following registry key by navigating through the tree view on left side. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Feedback

Find the file named Enabled inside the right window and open it in edit mode like shown below:

Change value from 1 to 0 and hit OK.

When you close all open MS Office screens and then reopen them, you will realize send a smile icon disappeared.

In Office 2016 this cannot be disabled because this is a new Microsoft initiative for trouble shooting their products. 🙁

Combining the method above and the method to remove the Smiley from IE, I came up with this solution that worked for me:

    1. In registry editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft
    2. Create new keys: Office > Common > Restrictions
    3. In that key, create new DWORD: NoHelpItemSendFeedback
    4. Edit value from 0 to 1

Launch any MS Office 2016 product and the smiley’s should not be there.
